Geocache Description:

A Stroll around the grounds of Newhailes House collecting clues to the final cache.

Newhailes House is a survival story from the 17th Century. The house was important during the Scottish Enlightenment in the early 18th century and has survived in a remarkably authentic condition.

Its 18th century designed landscape has not been preserved so well and has many hidden delights to discover. It’s a fascinating place to explore.

Newhailes is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. You can tour the house on a really interesting guided tour and there is a shop and café in the visitors’ centre (open May – Sep, Thurs – Mon, 12 – 5). The grounds are open all year for free but please respect the car park charges if arriving by car and you’re not a member of the NTS.

The given coordinates are for the car park between Fisherrow and Newcraighall.

1. Follow the Discovery Trail from the car park to the story-telling area at N 55 56.456 W 003 04.838.
First clue: What was the date that the lady of the house enjoyed a “Charming day out sitting with the gardener" 1806 Dec ABth

A =
B =

Note: This clue may have been removed. If so, try to use the excellent clue in the log note added on 18th May 2009 by akSCOOBY or more easily, see hint 1 below..

2. Carry on down the Discovery Trail main path to the Tea House at N55 56.682 W003 04.908. (your GPS may be dodgy here due to trees). This straddles the river and is inscribed with a latin motto that means “our humility”. How many letters are there in the first word of the latin motto?

C =

3. Carry on round the Tea House (don’t exit through the gate but pause here to look at the biggest, pinkest thatched house I’ve ever seen!). Go on to N 55 56.671 W003 04.649 where you’ll find the site of an old bridge that took the “ladies’ walk” over to a former viewpoint. The ladies’ walk was originally built in which century? EFth century.

D = F-E

4. While you continue on the Discovery Trail round the estate, work out the cache coordinates as follows:

N 55 56.BDC W003 04.DDA

Please don’t trample through the woods (especially during the spring flower season).

There will be lots of dog walkers around (but not too near the cache). It's a great place for dogs but please clean up after them. Maybe you'll meet a dog with one eye, maybe he's the one eyed hound...!
