Geocache Description:

A woodland walk around some Victorian fortifications that involves a couple of short, but steep slopes. Possibly muddy in the wet.

This cache replaces the original Fareham Folly (GCWP5C) which was muggled in June 07. We have put this cache in an entirely new location, hopefully well clear of inquisitive teenagers.

Fort Fareham is one of Palmerston's Follies, a series of forts built around Portsmouth during the 1860s in order to defend this vital port from the French. Completed in 1868, it remained in active use through the Second World War, when it served as the HQ for a number of anti-aircraft units. Now an industrial estate, the ramparts have wooded over and provide a pleasant walk with views of some fine examples of 19th century military architecture, now sadly decayed.

To find the cache, go to the large wooden sign 'Fareham Fort Woodland' at the coordinates given. On there you will find a phone number for the Countryside Ranger Service: 01329 ABCDEF. You will also need to calculate the following numbers:

G=C-D
H=B+D
I=A+C
J=C+D

From the sign, enter the wood and take the left hand path. The cache (a clear plastic tupperware container) is located off the path at:

N 50 GE.HJD
W 001 DD.AFI

Be warned that the terrain is rather steep. You also have to cross the bottom of what used to be a moat. It was fairly dry underfoot at the time that we placed the cache, but I suspect that it could be quite muddy during the wetter months. Tree cover is also an issue, but I spent some time averaging the location on my Garmin, so the coordinates should be reasonably accurate. The hint should sort you out if you're having snags.

Once you've located and carefully re-hidden the cache I suggest that you keep walking clockwise around the fort to complete the full circuit.
