Two dams, a pipeline and a birders paradise.
Eshowe, now part of the Umlalazi Municipality, was initially supplied with water from one dam only - Rutledge Park Dam. Yellow-billed Duck, Malachite Kingfisher, Reed Cormorant, Darter, African Fish Eagle and Three-banded Plover are to be found in the trees of the park at this dam. Look out for both Black and Greater Double-collared Sunbird as well as Black-bellied Starling. Cape White-eye and Green Pigeon can also be seen. The picnic sites here can become a bit rowdy at times.
As water demand grew during the 60's a second larger dam was built up-stream and named Eshlazi Dam. Yellow-billed Duck, White-faced Duck, Egyptian Goose, Brown-throated Martin, Spectacled Weaver and Blacksmith Plover as well as some waders can be found. Mountain Wagtail has turned up here before. Picnic spots have been developed here in this peaceful area.
A severe drought during 1992 resulted in Eshowe running out of water. The town was rationed to 4 hours of water per day and 10000 liters per household per month. An emergency pipeline was built from the Goedetrouw Dam now called Lake Phobane, some 12km away. This is now in permanent use supplementing the areas water supplies. At today’s usage Rutledge Park Dam, if full, would only hold sufficient water for 7 days.
