Cliff Top Walk Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mr Emu: Alas, as of December 2009, Parks Victoria do not permit geocaching in the Otway National Park. I'd not realised that this site falls within the Park boundary. Goodbye cache :-(

Geocache Description:

Mr Emu's fourth cache brings you to a slightly more out-of-the-way part of the Surf Coast of Victoria, and offers a (very) small taste of the 30 km Surf Coast Walk between Jan Juc and Moggs Creek.

This area is the part of the Great Otway National Park, and borders the Point Addis Marine National Park between Bell's Beach and Anglesea. From near the cache location there are nice views of Point Roadknight, Airey's Inlet and beyond, to the Otway Ranges.

Access by vehicle is via Hurst Rd, 4km of gravel road that can, at times, be a bit wet and slippery for a two-wheel drive car. You might want to consider recent weather and choose where you drive with discretion. You should also watch out for kangaroos along the road.

A small carpark at the end of the road will place you within 400m of the cache - an easy walk along a gravel path. The area is popular with mountain bike riders and bush-walkers, so you will still need to look out for the occasional muggle.

*Some advice, based on initial visits: About 1100m short of the final carpark there is a "Management Vehicles Only" sign on a track at what appears to be the end of the road. If you use the nearby carpark (S38 23.495 E144 13.340) you might not notice that the public road continues sharply to the left. Your GPS will indicate 700m to the cache from this point, and if you choose to walk from here the terrain rating would be 2.0, the track being steeper and more "bushy" (i.e. not stroller friendly). While a nice-enough walk, it is not the intended "Cliff Top Walk" that also offers very nice views to the North when near the carpark.

The cache you seek is a 1.2 litre camouflaged Sistema, with a logbook and an assortment of swaps. Please make sure the cache is not visible when you replace it.

*Well done to GeoJo for being the first to find this cache. As a previous winner of Mr Emu's FTF-prize geocoin, unfortunately she is not eligible to win this time around. Therefore, congratulations to RedPaw64 on winning the new, unactivated Australia 2007 (gold) geocoin.
