Geocache Description:

Located in the Village of Sarre, The cache is a lock lid container.

Now days the village of Sarre is better known for its windmill, Butonce had much was home to more important buildings. In the 1940's during World War 2 the South East Army Brigade Head Quarters were set up in Canterbury and a back up force set up in Sarre.

They consisted of a number of underground tunnels dug into the side of an old quarry. In the event of an invasion the forces in Sarre would back up the main force at Canterbury. The tunnels were manned by Canadian Forces during the war.

The entrances to the tunnels have now been filled up or bulldozed closed, although access has been made in the past year via less "conventional" routes. The remains of several Nissen Huts remain visible in the field next to the cache, but these seem to stand forgotten and overgrown.

From the recomended parking in Old Road walk back to the main road and follow the GPSr past the pub, A footpath travels down beside a gate (look for the flagpole) taking this will get you to the cache location. To completely see the remains of the camp walk past the cache site, turn right at the footpath sign and walk down the edge of the field. Turning right again and walking along the edge of the road the huts are in the field on your right.

THE HUTS AND TUNNELS ARE VERY UNSTABLE AND DANGEROUS DO NOT ENTER (they also happen to be on private land.)

If your interested a video of the inside of the tunnels can be found here
