No, not an over heard snippet from my daughter’s last cell phone call.
Inspired by the fun our family had doing the “fossil Find” virtual cache (GC6B91) This is not a virtual cache but rather a two-fer. You’ll have a cache to log and if your eyes are sharp, a few a few fossils to see up close.
No need to split stones, or dig in pits, clean off globs of tar. With the unique geology of the Santa Monica Mountains, the backbone trail actually crosses a vein containing fossils from the[insert scientific fact here] Period. Countless hikers before you have unearthed and exposed these fossils with their plodding feet, but only a few have noticed. Now that you know they’re here, enjoy feeling that cachers everywhere know… the joy of finding unseen treasures under the Muggles very noses.
The cache is located off the trail so you can enjoy the it unmolested while the others look at the fossils.
08/26/07 PLEASE BE ADVISED! I have been informed that since this portion of the Backbone Trail is in the State Park System, the taking of any fossils is considered illegal!
It was my intention to bring you to an area where the grading of the motorway, trail use and natural erosion had exposed these small fossils. It was my hope to give you an opportunity to enjoy the fossils before they were destroyed, under foot, by normal trail usage.
As hikers and cachers, I had never thought that any of our community would ever, purposely, damage trails or the fragile environment. Nor would I think you consciously do anything that would bring discredit to those in our geocaching family who invest so much of their own time and sweat as volunteers on the trail councils or the Park services. So for now, please enjoy the cache and the discoveries under your feet, but take only memories or photos.
