From Essex center, go up North Main Street and quickly turn right onto Bushnell Street. Follow the signs for public access to the water. Just a short walk from the parking area; some overgrowth and debris to step over.
This is another addition to Wing-it’s useful Kayak/Canoe Launch series. I think this is the best spot to launch in Essex, considering ease of access to the water and parking. It is part of the Connecticut River Estuary Canoe/Kayak Trail system, partially funded by the Long Island Sound License Plate Program. Trail maps have been available at North Cove Outfitters in the past. The “official” launch site is over in Essex Town Park, but not as easy as this is. From here you paddle straight out into North Cove, a quiet, calm area sheltered from the CT River boat traffic by Great Meadow and a wonderful place for wildlife viewing. Falls River Cove is accessed from the northwest side of the cove. North Cove is very shallow at low tide, but at higher water levels there is an opening in the Great Meadow isthmus through which you can quickly gain access to the CT River. It is in the general vicinity of the Great Meadow cache. Alternately, you may head south from the launch area and go through the marinas, admiring all of the fancy boats (which never seem to go anywhere). Continue paddling south with the Essex riverfront on your right, then around to the west into picturesque Middle and South Coves, separated by Thatchbed Island. Before returning, Nott Island, directly east from South Cove, is a quick paddle across the channel and is worth a visit, if only to stretch out on a sandy beach.
