Geocache Description:

An old-school ammo can hide on another deserted island in the middle of the Cape Fear River. Once again, you will need your kayak/canoe/submarine/swim fins, etc! Start your adventure at River Road Park, and it’s just a short journey up the river.

Just about very time we go exploring in our kayaks, we always end up on some interesting island and regret not having a cache to hide there. This time we were prepared – although we did not have a plan or a set destination, we DID have a fully-stocked (yet-unnamed) cache stashed in the kayak. And boy, were we glad that we did…

The frayguy and the head fraygirl had a pleasant but uneventful trip to the area near this island. Pelicans were flying overhead, little fish were jumping out of the water, and egrets were lurking in the grasses – very nice. We were starting to head back to "Rebel Island" when we spotted something over there in the shipping channel. We paused to get a better look at the area and within a few seconds, YES! There it is again – definitely a dolphin! And then another…and then another…and then another! Four dolphins, all jumping and frolicking in the water right before our very eyes! We sat in the water and watched their antics for nearly an hour and then made the decision to return to this particular island and hide this cache in their honor.

The island itself is small, but fraught with mystery and risk. When you make your approach, you will find that the water becomes very shallow very quickly. It also gets very rocky under the water, as though the island wants you to stay away. When you land your boat you will have the option of walking through very tall, thick grasses (and who knows *what* could be living in there), or you could take your chances and use the less direct route along the shore. We chose this option, and quickly found ourselves being pursued by an army of clicking fiddler crabs! We managed to escape unharmed, but soon realized that we would need to do some rock-climbing if we were to offer the cache a worthy sanctuary. We avoided the scary witch-circle of rocks near the center of the forest and kept to the safety of the perimeter. Then we had to do all of that stuff in reverse to get back to our boats, all the while gawking out into the water as the dolphins continued their festivities!

We wish you luck with your journey and the cache. We can’t guarantee that the dolphins will return to this area, but we do know that you’ll have a great adventure here. We can’t wait to hear about it!
