Geocache Description:

Great South Bay, unnamed Island just east of Captree Island - requires a power boat, jet ski or kayak

Second in the Captain Jack series. See the original Captain Jack's Treasure for more background info: (visit link)
As the name says this is Captain Jack's Rum Island cache. Although the rules do not allow real rum to be hidden, rolled up and tucked into an empty rum bottle is a gift certificate for the real thing. This FTF booty is for those over 21 and can be redeemed at a liquor store in Centereach. For the under 21 crowd there are gift certificates for Italian Ices. Also for the first lucky pirate is a FTF commemorative Geochip.

The coordinates do not take you right to the cache, but to a bush that stands out from the perimeter of the clearing. In the movie it was a hollow tree, but a pirate has to work with what he finds. To find the booty stand on the North side of the bush and take 4 LARGE steps (just like the movie) due North. An old fashioned compass comes in handy here. Besides the FTF booty there are gold coins, a Yankee logo baseball and other trade items. Please hide the cache as you found it.

As can be seen by the posted Google Earth image the area around the Island is a maze of sand bars. This and the strong tidal currents are the reason for the 4.5 terrain rating. Especially if attempted by Kayak. If attempting by Kayak please be experienced in open water paddling. Even though this a relatively sheltered corner of the bay it has very strong tidal currents. It is recommended that paddlers take the North West passage pioneered by Mrs. Captain Lobster-Firstmate, aka Lenora biopcd. The put-in coordinates are N40 38.682' W73 16.042'. Follow the link in the beginning of this text to see biopcd’s posting in the original Captain Jack’s Treasure. This route is longer than launching at Captree State Park, but it is a lot safer than having to cross the state channel with all of the boat traffic and strong tidal currents. If you take this route stop along the way at Waterspyder’s , WS - 123 BAYMEN SERIES - DRIVE BY MAGNET cache, (visit link) .

When you get to the Island be prepared to do battle. The mosquitoes guarding the rum are murder. Bring plenty of bug spray and maybe a mosquito net hat.

Enjoy, but please be careful. Follow all safety afloat rules, life jackets for all children, better yet life jackets for all.
