The Hollywood Islands Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

sunnyside7: This cache has had a long run, Thirteen years and three months. Good time to let it go, as I look out the window and see our first measurable snow of the winter. Thanks to all that have visited our historic Hollywood!

Geocache Description:

The Hollywood Islands are very slowly disappearing.

Come and see them while you can.

At the listed coordinates you will be at the site where a former island succumbed to progress and became a village parkway. A memorial has been placed there commemorating its original island status. You will have to visit some of the remaining islands to collect data in order to find the final.

First you must obtain the coordinates for all of the islands you will be visiting. Read the rock, use simple substitution for the following, and plug in all your numbers.

The year that the Hollywood "Islands" were incorporated = ABCD

How many islands were there originally = AE

The year that the island at this spot become a parkway = FGGA

(In case you want to double check some figures) The date that the Brookfield Historical Commission dedicated this marker, using the format (MMDYY) = AGAGF

D + D = H

F + F = J

H + A = K

Island 1 = N41* 49.DEG W87* 49.CJH

Island 2 = N41* 49.DJG W87* 50.GCF

Island 3 = N41* 49.EBE W87* 50.GFB

Island 4 = N41* 49.EKD W87* 50.AGA

Island 5 = N41* 49.HHF W87* 49.CHD

Now plug in the coordinates for the islands you need to visit. (You do not need to visit them in any particular order)

If you're not having fun yet, here's something fun you can do (A little experiment, not required). If you drove here, check the mileage on your odometer when you get back in your car. (Unless of course you decide to hoof it around the multi-course) Check your mileage again after you have visited the waypoints and you have parked your car to go and find the final. Include your mileage in your online log (be honest) and we'll have an idea of how much you drove around in circles, and how many times you may have circled the same islands. As for parking, pay attention to the details on the street signs, and you should have no trouble. Please, do not do any math while driving, or your car may suddenly end up on an island, which is embarrassing, and if caught, you may be asked to walk a straight line, right after you've been going around in circles for the last 15 minutes.

Now visit the islands and compute the final coords. On each island you will look for two signs perpendicular to each other, each with a four digit number. Ignore the two zeroes, and consider only the first 2 digits of each number! Complete the simple functions at each island to obtain all the parts of the final coords.

At Island 1 - Add 3 to each number. You figure out the rest.

At Island 2 - The smaller number + 11 = MM. The 2nd digit of the larger number = .M (NORTH = MM.M)

At Island 3 - Add the two numbers together, and subtract 50 = ?? (NORTH = MM.M??)

At Island 4 - subtract the smaller number from the larger number, then subtract 1 = MM. Now look again at the smaller number. Consider the digits as the first two numbers of a simple numerical sequence. What would a third number in the sequence be? That number = .M (WEST = MM.M)

At Island 5 -(The numbers are not actually on this island, but on the nearby corner just to the north) First add the 2 numbers together. Then add 1, divide by 2, subtract 10 = ?? (WEST = MM.M??)

The final cache is situated on it's own "little island" of sorts.

To the First Time Finder: Congratulations! Please take the "official" FTF purple mini-frisbe. The cache container can hold several small items. If the cache is missing when you are here, e-mail me and correctly describe the object that you think the cache should have been in (see additional hints), and give yourself credit for the find. (Don't describe the object online)

Have fun!

Congratulations to jrotccadet05
