Forgotten Industries 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

mad.bird: I’ve decided to archive this cache as it’s not popular and it’s time to go.
I went to the GZ to pick up the container. It was in really good condition. I might just put it somewhere else….

Geocache Description:

This concrete road was built in early 1960,s, is 4 miles long and was constructed to carry iron ore by large dump trucks, from a new pit north of Skillington village near Pasture Farm to a tipping dock at Colsterworth north sidings, where the iron ore was to be tipped into main line rail trucks.
It was to be part of the United Steel Co. quarrying operations, which were extensive in South Lincolnshire and Rutland, and the ore produced was to be taken to blast furnaces in Scunthorpe.
It was built as a long term quarrying project, but it was never to be used for its original purpose, as rail tracks were extended to enable more ore to be quarried from existing pits.
The road and bridges are still in place and are used by local farmers for access to fields.

You can park in the village, or by the road at the start of the public footpath (N52 49 567 W000 39 925) that goes from the Skillington to Stoke Rochford road, to nowhere. From the cache site you can make a circular walk by walking down the concrete road and then along the other public footpath that takes you back to Skillington village. There are two very good pubs in the village if you get thirsty!
