Geocache Description:

This cache commemorates one of the Lowveld's special pioneers - Braam Raubenheimer, after whom this lake was originally named. We would have loved to hide this cache right on top of "Koppie Alleen", but it's private property, so you won't have to climb up there.

The cache might appear to be very close to the R36 between Machadodorp and Lydenburg, but you're not likely to get to it via the direct route - but who knows, you might be lucky, and experience some rural Africa en-route.

We recommend turning off the R36 at the turnoff co-ordinates below, pass the police station and liquor store (what a combination), turn right after about 200m, and follow the fence line for 2 kms. If the water level is high, this is the only route to the cache, which is OK for a car if not too wet, and will get you to within an easy 300m walk to the cache. If the water level is low, there is a choice of many tracks which will all get you there.

The area near the cache location is a 4x4, quadbike and scrambler paradise, especially if the water level is low. With a 4x4 and a bit of ingenuity, you can drive to within 1m of the cache!!

ABRAHAM JACOBUS (BRAAM) RAUBENHEIMER

Born 1920 near Vryburg, matriculated at Belfast High School in 1938, obtained BSc Horticulture at the University of Pretoria.

Braam became MP for Nelspruit in 1966, Deputy Minister for Bantu Development in 1971, and Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry in 1976.

His effort and persistance resulted in this important dam, which provides water for Nelspruit, and for agriculture along about 200kms of the Crocodile River.
