Geocache Description:

Elevation series cache #6

There's been some recent speculation as to which traditional cache is highest in Oregon. 3 different ones seem to be around the same height. This cache is placed so that the speculation can end. Perched high atop the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon lies Rock Creek Butte at 9106 feet. The route requires a 5 1/2 mile hike followed by a 1/2 mile scramble to the top. Easy way from the east = 4x4 rough road with 1600 foot elevation gain. Hard way from the south = easier road with 3500 foot gain.

The cache is placed on the secondary summit with stunning views of Bucket Lake as well as the Butte's namesake water feature. The cache is placed 300 feet from the higher summit and should not be confused with the ammo box used as a summit register. The cache itself is also an ammo can, but is camo-painted to blend with the red rock nearby. Can you pick out any of the nearby landmarks? I know the area quite well but you can see so far I was unable to I.D. a few. The farthest mountain west that is still in the Elkhorn range is Mt. Ireland. You can probably view the Lookout tower with proper magnifying equipment. The day the cache was placed we could see south as far as Castle Rock some 60 miles distant.

The cache is rated 5 due to the lack of a trail system the last 1/2 mile. Pick your ascent and hope for the best. Otherwise it's one step forward.. you know the rest...

7/20/08 Update: Logscaler now has highest cache honors with 9733 - Steens Mtn. At least I had good run with highest cache honors for close to a year!
