Geocache Description:

Located near the historic Marr Residence in Nutana.

A dignified white home with a sweeping Mansard roof, the Marr Residence is the oldest known building in Saskatoon located on its original site. It is a tangible link to the Temperance Colony, being one of the earliest homes built in 1884, likely from the first barge load of lumber sent down the river. It was built by stonemason, Alexander “Sandy” Marr, who also built Saskatoon's first permanent school, the "Little Stone School", now located on the U of S Campus.

Following the Riel Uprising, the wounded from the Canadian Militia began to arrive in Saskatoon. General Middleton's forces requisitioned as part of a field hospital in May 1885 to treat the wounded from the Battles of Fish Creek and Batoche during the North-West Rebellion. Eighty - five wounded men arrived from Batoche by river on the steamer Northcote and were treated in this and two adjoining houses in May and June of 1885. When the hospital closed in July, 1885, the home was returned to the Marr family. The Marr family continued to live in the house until 1889 and the property served as a domestic residence until the late 1970s.

Legend has it that the Marr Residence is haunted. This house has had many inhabitants over the years, and as a result there seem to be many stories to tell. There are two very different apparitions in the building: one which appears as a spectral light, within which the face of child can be seen; and the other prominent spirit seems to be a chauvinistic ghost, tormenting only the women he meets. These two separate and opposite spirits seem to be oblivious to one another. The Marr Residence ghosts were featured on an episode of Creepy Canada in 2005.

The Marr Residence is available for tours. Information for tours can be found around the front of the building.

The cache is not located on the Marr Residence property but just outside in the adjoining public alley. The cache is a small container covered in residential cammo. It has room for small items only. There is no writing utensil in the cache so please bring your own. Please be careful of muggles. In your logs please make no mention as to the type of cammo this container has so that others can enjoy the challenge. Accuracy at time of hiding was only 10m. Happy caching!
