Geocache Description:

LadyBee4T and Nurse Nanna are proud to be members of:

Placed together with LadyBee4T, an adventure in itself! Large container, large mosquitoes and lots of goodies.

Mosquito facts:

*The world's largest mosquito is not actually here in Michigan despite the fact that I think I was attacked by it while placing this cache. It is actually a statue in Komarno, Manitoba, the mosquito capital of Canada. (Komarno is Ukrainian for mosquito) The statue is made of steel and has a wingspan of 15 feet....now how would you like to hear that one buzzing your head?

*There are over 2500 varieties of mosquito whining from the Arctic tundra to the tropical rain forests. Most are active during dawn and dusk, but some do like a mid day feeding.

*Mosquitoes do not bite, they suck.

*It would take 1,200,000 mosquitoes, each sucking once to completely drain the average human of blood...so fear not, we are probably safe here at Proud Lake.

*In the Arctic, Canadian researchers who bared their arms, legs and torsos reported as many as 9000 bites per minute from swarming newly hatched mosquitoes. At that rate, an individual could lose half his blood in 2 hours.

*Once a feeding mosquito is full, a chemical signal shuts down their intake. When that signal is disabled in the lab, mosquitoes suck until they explode. It is hard to get upset with that.

*When a mosquito detects the whine of the opposite sex, it begins to synchronize its pitch to match that of the potential mate. Males can "relate" to girl frequencies in a second or two. Females take several times longer to synchronize. Sounds like a typical male!

*Mosqutoes can mate in midair in as little as 15 seconds. Not much fun I'd say!

*Mosquitoes also use your exhaled breath to track you down, especially when you sleep or have been exercising. Fortunately they only clock out at 1.5 mph...so you can't hide, but you can run. Unless you are on a treadmill, or run like I do!

*Abuja, Nigeria is home to the world's biggest mosquito net. 200 children fit under it.

*Millions of poeple alive today will die of mosquito-transmitted disease. Malaria alone claims some 1,000,000 lives a year in Africa. Other top killers are dengue, yellow fever and West Nile Virus.

It won't take a 3 hour tour to find this one, but you will feel like you have become lost in another world here.

This cache is in the Proud Lake Recreation Area and a State Parks Entry Pass is needed to enter. This cache was placed with a permit at the office and will be removed within one year of placement per MiGO/DNR Permit.
