Geocache Description:

Torvet i Ærøskøbing

The square in Ærøskøbing

The town is exceptional in Denmark. Its unique qualities are to be found in a continuous and medieval town plan, which has been kept intact due to a persevering effort from townsmen and the municipal government. The vibrant beauty of the town is seen in the charming houses, which depict old building traditions developed over centuries.

The square in Ærøskøbing and the reunification mark in the middle. Here you can also admire the old signs, some dating more than 200 years back. The signs are mentioned in connection with the “Europa Nostra” in 2002 award as admirable details in the townscape. The old water pumps were used until 1952.

At the square are “The Source of Wisdom” – the former grammar school from 1782 with the lime trees in front and the church in the background Ærøskøbing Church from 1756-58.

A stroll through the town is like going back in time; one beautiful street scene is followed by another and the picturesque houses, old street lamps and blooming roses perfectly frame the idyll.
