A cache placed in memory of the dearly departed Magellan Pioneer GPS receiver.
NOTE: cache is not located at above coordinates!
This cache has been set up to allow everyone the fun of trying to find a geocache with the accuracy of the old Pioneer. It only displayed 2 decimal places instead of three for the location, so the coordinates above have had the last digits replaced by zeros. The first few caches we ever found were done using the Pioneer. It passed on shortly thereafter and we upgraded to an Explorist.
Back in '98, I was given a new fangled GPS receiver. I had just finished the long winter where I had to walk 5 miles to work in the snow, facing the wind, uphill, in both directions.
In those days we were happy with the GPS. We were happy with the 30 minute cold startup time. We were happy with the 10 minute warm startup time. We were happy with the 3 satellites we could get to lock. We were happy with Selective Availability. We never had it like kids today with their fancy Sirf III chipsets. These kid today have no idea how easy things are for them.
"I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. 'Give me five bees for a quarter,' you’d say.
"Now where were we? Oh yeah—the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..." *
What were we talking about again? Oh-yeah, the cache. It is another one of our patented camo Koolaid containers. It is initially stocked with:
- FTF: a 512MB flash mp3 player and a 180 song download card from EMusic
- STF: a 512MB flash drive
- TTF: a small LED flashlight
- a log book
- a few little plastic dinosaurs
Try to hide it at least as well as you find it. Bringing your own pen/pencil is always a good idea. We usually park at the Black Mountain Ranch Community Park.
