Geocache Description:

A cache located at one of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Boy Scout Council's camps.

Camp Acahela is one of the oldest Boy Scout camps in America. It was founded by the Wilkes-Barre Council in 1919 and is now owned by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council. The camp is open year round to Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, Venturing Crews and hosts a variety of training and other special events. During the summer, it is used as the Council’s Cub Scout resident camp and hosts several religious youth camps. The word Acahela is from the native Lenape language and means "the joining of waters." Camp Acahela is located at the junction of the Tobyhanna Creek and the Lehigh River, hence the name.

Although I've personally camped many times at Acahela, I've never had a summer camp experience there. I've only ever resident camped at NEPA's other camp: Goose Pond (there is another geocache located at Goose Pond).

The cache is located outside the camp's main entrance. It is hidden well and will require some searching. The cache itself is a large plastic cylindrical container. I've never used this kind of container before so it's experimental. For the same reason, there is only a log book in the cache. If the container proves to be successful, finders can put trade items inside it.

Since Camp Acahela is private property owned by the NEPA Council, please do not venture past the front gate unless you are being escorted by someone from the council or are with a scout troop or cub pack. There is a yellow gate that will prevent access by car past the ranger's house, so there is no point in driving in. The cache is in a spot well outside the front gate and special permission has been granted to place it there.

I have been told that if geocachers wander past the front gate and into the camp, the cache will be de-activated. This is for your safety and for the safety of the many scouts who visit here each year.

DO NOT be the person to ruin this cache for everyone else.

Have fun.

Good caching and Good luck!
