Kaunas Fortress is the remains of a
fortress complex in Kaunas, Lithuania. The fortress was originally
constructed as an imperial Russian redoubt of the Class 1 or "first
class" grade. Its gradual construction lasted from 1882 to 1915.
During its heyday, the fortress was the largest defensive structure
in the entire state, occupying 65 km2 (25.1 mi2). The fortress was
tested by war in 1915, when Germany attacked the Russian Empire: at
that time the fortress withstood eleven days of assault before
being captured. After the battle, the fortress' military importance
declined due to the outmoding of its design by more modern weaponry
and it was used for various civil and military purposes. When
Lithuania was occupied by Nazi Germany during the Second World War,
some surviving portions of the fortress were used for mass
executions. Currently some sections of the fortress have been
restored to their original form and the Ninth Fort houses a museum
and memorial devoted to the victims of mass executions that took
place there during World War II.

keliu ir kt. Pirmini tvirtoves generalini plana sudare Vyriausiojo
štabo generolas adjutantas Obrucevas kartu su generolais Zverevu ir
Volbergu. Po triju metu, 1882 m. balandžio men., buvo pradetas
pirmasis statybos etapas, kuris tesesi iki 1887 m. Pirmajame
generaliniame plane (kuris veliau buvo koreguojamas) numatyta
miesta apjuosti 7 fortu ir 12 bateriju žiedu, irengti centrini
itvirtinima, kairiajame Nemuno krante (Fredoje) pastatyti karine
geležinkelio stoti, dirbtuves, laboratorijas, sandelius, tvirtoves
vandentiekio stoti, nutiesti kelius ir kt.
