INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#576
"Old Simpson Chapel
Cemetery"
This quest will bring you to the Old
Simpson Chapel Cemetery in Washington Township of Monroe County.
The cemetery is just west of the Simpson Church, which has a new
cemetery adjacent to it. The older cemetery is mowed, but the
headstones are generally in very bad condition. The majority of the
stones are unreadable. However, the stones that can be read include
a Revolutionary War veteran and a few Civil War veterans. This
cemetery was founded in 1823, making it a pioneer cemetery by any
definition.
There is a mowed spot in the SE corner where a car can pull in.
There is also a gravel area across the road, but a utility building
there is marked as "Tampering with this building is a federal
offense". There are two lanes on either side of this building that
should not be blocked. If the weather allows, parking in the grass
pull-off of is preferred.
He Served With George Rogers
Clark
John Back enlisted in Virginia in 1778. George Rogers Clark was
in Virginia around this time looking for help to defend Kentucky, a
county of Virginia at the time. Clark returned west with 150+
recruits. Back served under General George Rogers Clark in the
Illinois Regiment. Some of the Illinois Regiment took part in
Clark's winter capture of Fort Vincennes. It is known that John
Back took part in some of Clark's campaigns in the old Northwest.
He is listed as one of the members of the regiment who did not
receive land grants after the war. Several privates received 108
acres, even though Governor Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and
other founding fathers had alluded they would receive 300 acres
when Virginia men were being recruited for the Illinois
Regiment.
Civil War Veteran
Henry Simms served with the 145th Indiana. This regiment was
recruited late in the war, but saw some skirmish action in
Tennessee and Georgia. Other regiments represented in this cemetery
include the 33rd Indiana and 67th Indiana. The 33rd participated in
Sherman's march through the south, while the 67th participated in
battles in Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
