Getting to this cache involves about a 6.5 to 7 mile round trip hike on logging roads, game trails and some bushwhacking. The elevation varies between 4600' and 4900'. Come prepared with food, water, extra clothes and make sure to tell someone where you are going.
One day at work a co-worker friend of mine told me about Fort Simons Ridge above Waha Lake in the Craig Mountains south of Lewiston. He said that back in the mid to late 1800's there was a series of forts or lookouts located along this ridge that were manned by the army. This got my curiosity up and I decided to hike into this area and check it out for myself and in the process place a cache. I did find an old log cabin that could have been part of this so called fort and a flat mound of dirt further in that looks like it was man made.
The views from this ridge are outstanding. When the weather is clear you should be able to see the Wallowa Mountains to the south and the Blue Mountains to the west.
This cache originally started out as a multi-cache with four way points to find before finding the final cache. Unfortunately a fire in July 2007 destroyed two of the way points and it was getting too difficult to maintain all of them, so I decided to archive the orginal cache and start a new one.
Depending on the route you decide to take, a mountain bike could be used for part of it. The area is closed to motorized vehicles; only hiking, horse back riding, biking and snowmobiling (in the winter) are allowed.
