Hoosier_Reviewer: Since there has been no response to my previous note, I am archiving the cache.

While we feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you for a reasonable amount of time, we cannot do so indefinitely. In light of the lack of communication regarding this geocache, it has been archived to free up the area for new placements. You will not be able to unarchive this listing. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up this geocache or any remaining bits as soon as possible.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #577

"Simpson Chapel Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Simpson Chapel Cemetery in Washington Township of Monroe County. This is the newer of two Simpson Cemeteries. The older cemetery is just west on the same road and also holds an ISQ cache. While this cemetery is 'newer' it still goes back to mid-19th century. There are veterans buried here from the Mexican-American War, Civil War, World War I, World War II and Korean War.

This is an active church, so please avoid coming here on Sunday mornings. Besides the two caches in the area, Oliver Winery is also close by on the opposite side of Highway 37.

Mexican-American War Veteran

Young Morinson was a member of company G in the 4th Indiana Regiment. This regiment served from July 1847 to June 1848. For those of you who have ancestors who were veterans of the Mexican War, a descendants lineage society has been formed. Similar to the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution, this organization is called the "Descendants of the Mexican War Veterans, or DMWV.

Civil War Veteran

Corporal Bastin served with the 67th Indiana. This regiment participated in western theater of the war. Vicksburg was the best known battle for the regiment, but they were also active Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.

Intelligence Officer

Elbert Spradling was an S2 in the United States Naval Reserve Forces. The S2 rank is for the unit's intelligence officer. Many reserves were called to active duty when the USA entered World War 1.

Interesting Symbol

The symbol on this headstone is not one of the common types. Given the hammer and square, it would appear Wiseman Anderson must have been a carpenter, but searches of several sites on cemetery symbols and emblems failed to turn up a standard emblem for carpenters.
