This the first physical cache in Tibet -- Let's hope it lasts a
good while. The cache is located at Namtso Lake (Na Mu Cu in
Chinese) which is about a 2 hour drive outside of Lhasa. This is
the highest altitude saltwater lake in the water and one of the
most beautiful places you will see on your visit to China. The lake
is a protected area so there is only one road in and out and only
one area where there are walking paths to the lake. The cache is
near one of the paths. I've named this cache Holy Lake because many
of Tibet's geographic characteristics (mountains, lakes, etc.) are
considered holy in Tibetan culture.
The lake is at an altitude of 4730m or over 15400 ft. This means
that you will breath in less than 50% of the oxygen per breath that
you get at sea level. At one point on the road there you will pass
an even higher point a 5190m (17,000 ft) altitude marker. It is
very important that you WALK SLOWLY to prevent altitude
illness.
Once you are at the coordinates, you should have no problem
finding the cache. It is a regular tupperware container with
logbook, pen and other items. Since this cache is in such a remote
location, it will be hard to maintain. Please be stealthy finding
and replacing the cache.
Good luck and enjoy your visit to Namtso Lake, to Tibet and to
China.
Small note on cache maintenance: I am in contact
with a local tour bus operator who will help maintain the cache.
