Geocache Description:

This artesian spring is the lesser known one in the Moncton area, located along the Weisner Road.

We’ve all seen the old wells which one would see at a farm, with the circular stones and odd looking children climbing out of em… (oh wait that was a movie… ) But anyhow, those wells were just holes down to a confirmed aquifer. What we have here is an artesian well.

An artesian well is water which has become pressurized in a confined aquifer underground and appears to climb its way to the surface through porous rock like limestone or sandstone where the aquifer is close to the surface or one creates a path to it. Because the pressurized water is already trying to find a way to the surface, if one creates a direct path via drill hole or other such method into the rock, this gives the water a direct route to escape via, and as such creates a virtual spout at the surface level. Depending on the level of pressure, size of opening, and distance the water needs to travel, the “spout” or escaping water velocity can vary from spring to spring.

This particular spring is unique due to the environment which it occupies, typically an artisian well occupies the land below the recharge zone of a given aquifers. Due to the relative flatness of the surrounding landscape, this spring is much further below the ground the the one on Gorge Road. This spring also draws from the same source which Dieppe is looking to tap into for their water supply.

In order to log this cache, please complete the following tasks:

1. Take a picture of the water outflow location with yourself and your GPSr in the picture

2. Measure the water flow in units per minute. For example, record the time it takes to fill a litre, gallon, quart or whatever size container you have, and convert that result to give a "units per minute". Now the tricky part… Based on this principle, if you arrived at this location with the following containers, how long would it take to fill them all up with water form this well. You will need to convert your waterflow for the different units to solve this question (take out those old math textbooks…) Email this information to me.
