Stokesley multicache Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to recent logs or logged into geocaching.com for some time I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,

Geocache Description:

A short multicache that is doable in 30 minutes or so, and finishing up a busy, stealth demanding nano-cache.

The market town of Stokesley has a number of old features hidden away behind the main street of buildings. In the Domesday Book, Stokesley is mentioned as having a watermill and a priest. The River Leven was central to the village and the houses and streets have grown up around the bridges and fording places. The Packhorse Bridge in the centre of the town was built in the 17th Century. In the Middle Ages, Stokesley was ruled under the feudal system and the villagers were allowed to run their own crofts or homesteads behind each cottage. In some places, these old boundaries can still be seen.

For centuries, Stokesley has held an annual agricultural show (late September); there is also a fair at the same time. The show field is to the north of the town, and the site of the old watermill is marked with a wooden mill wheel. This cache is placed at the time of the fair, but it is probably best visited when it is less busy.

There are some good local shops, excellent hotel and other surprises. The cache location has been chosen to allow a quick visit afterwards to one of these surprises…. Chapters Bistro (try the Italian hot chocolate) which is nearby.

Please take care when looking for, and replacing the cache as it is in a busy place and there will be muggles about.

Park on the market square near to the town hall (N54°28.192 W001°11.533) or along the high street (a parking disc is needed and available from any of the shops). You will need to visit the following locations to collect dates in order to substitute the letters below into the final solution for the cache coordinates.

The final cache location is at N54°DB.GAF W001°GG.C6E

Starting at the Town Hall (N54°28.192 W001°11.533) a plaque shows the date the building was constructed. 18A3.

Behind the Town Hall, there is a little seating area and public loos. At
N54°28.188 W001°11.563 a plaque commemorates the site of a market cross that was here. What date is mentioned? 17B3.

Now walk to Barclays bank at coordinates N54°28.192 W001°11.612.
In what year was Dr Yeoman in residence? 1938-C3

Next, go to the old Preston Grammar School at N54°28.242 W001°11.409. When was it built? 183D.

The watermill wheel mentioned at the site of the old mill mentioned in the Domesday book is next at N54°28.226 W001°11.259. When was the mill demolished? 1E83.

Now, head East along the road and cross at the pelican crossing, and take the path down along the side of the river. At N54°28.164 W001°11.323 you will see the plaque commemorating some Stokesley residents. In which year did the first white woman settle in Australia? 181F.

Carry on along the River Leven (you might bring some bread to feed the ducks!), and past the Packhorse Bridge to find the Red House on Bridge Street. (N54°28.152 W001°11.608 ). In which year was this was this building refurbished? GEB2.

You now have all the numbers you need to locate the final cache. Simply substitute the letters from the dates you’ve collected into the final solution.

N54°DB.GAF W001°GG.C6E

Regrettably, this is not a cache that will allow for travel bugs or coins to be stowed. It is a nano sized cache for obvious reasons. Please bring or buy your own pencil, and just sign the log. Thanks.
