Geocache Description:

The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular geocache. However, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT), a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Visit the AGT website at www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at www.geocaching.com.

Welcome to the Austin Dam Memorial Park! This cache is not about finding a metal box or adding one more point to your count, but rather to pay respect to an event in history that claimed many lives. In 1909, construction of the dam was completed at a cost of $88,000. The dam itself held over 265 million gallons of water, which at the time was the largest concrete dam in Pennsylvania. On September 30th, 1911, the dam gave way, hurling a tidal wave of water towards the town of Austin. On that day, 78 people lost thier lives. Because of this disaster, Federal and State regulations were set forth and inspection laws inacted. In 1989, the Austin Dam Memorial Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Special thanks to the Austin Dam Memorial Association for allowing the placement of the cache on this site.

- The entrance of the Memorial Park is just North (0.85 miles) of the dam on Route 872 (N41°39.896 W078°05.346).

- After turning off Route 872, cross the small bridge and make the first left. Drive about 9 (NINE) tenths of a mile to the upper-level parking area. Please note that there is no winter maintenance on the park's road, and even less in summer!

- After finding the cache, please take time to visit the "dam" area (sorry, couldn't resist). If your vehicle has high clearance, you may want to drive down to the lower-level parking area to get a closer look at the ruins. Thanks for visiting Potter County!
