Geocache Description:

This is the forth cache and fifth sign in our new series. Despite the title you should find this series full of learning opportunities. It will be about presidents, historic events (local and national), the Civil War and much more. We hope you enjoy this series. WARNING: Most of the caches in this series will be road side stops, use extreme caution. Some of these roads are very busy! All locations have a place to pull off. Please use extreme caution when doing this series! BYOP!

Most of the signs in this series are part of the West Virginia Highway Historical Marker Program. The first signs were placed in 1937 to encourage tourism.

The sign will read: Colonel Lewis Washington, who lived here, was one of the hostages captured by John Brown in 1859 in his raid on Harpers Ferry. When captured, Brown wore a sword, once owned by George Washington, taken from this home. (1 Mi. N.)

The following are some more references if you would like to explore for more information. The capture of John Brown by Irreal Green. You can in fact go to this home it is further down the road and now part of a new community. Enter just past the rail road tracks on the right, you will see the signs for the Beallair community.
