The cache is an ammo box, located in close proximity to the Callahan Railroad grade. This old railroad grade is now Forest Service trail #153. The trail passes through a mixed conifer forest, including some old growth cedar. Since the trail follows the 1920's railroad grade, it is a relatively easy hike. The Forest Service has placed several interpretive signs along this route, so you can learn about the early mining & logging activities in this stream drainage.
From Troy, MT., drive about one mile southwest up Callahan Creek rd. A large sign marks the Historic Callahan Trail; a pull-out is available for parking. It's approximately .3 mile to the cache area from the trailhead.
You can continue along this historic hike through the past, to another cache (Callahan Nature Trail - GCJRJM). It would be about two miles round trip, for both caches.
Original cache contains lots of cool swag including local favorite - Alan Lane Band CD, carabiner/compass, Geocaching pin, thermometer/compass, first aid kit, and a trackable Travel Bug and a Canadian Geocoin.
Detailed historic information is available in publications, including: Logging the South Fork of Callahan Creek, 1923 - 1929 (Calvi, 1995) at local book stores or the Troy museum.
