A short walk of about two miles there and back on flat terrain with good views of the Cotswold scarp passing Allens barn which has some significance to this cache.
This is a multi with one micro giving the co-ords for the final.
In early 1707 a group of men got together and decided to rob Ann Cormell of Bretforton who sometimes lent money to neighbours. She was killed during the burglary and they set her house on fire to conceal her murder.
She was believed to have died in the fire.
In November 1707 they commited a similar crime at Upton Snodsbury where they broke into the house of Mrs Palmer and killed both her and her maid and set her house on fire.A neighbour heard a womans screams and rushed to help managing to drag Mrs Palmers body out before it was burnt revealing that she had died after suffering wounds to her head and body. This meant she and her maid had been murdered not accidentally killed in the fire.People then remembered the event earlier that year at Bretforton and realised there had been a similar crime.
The men involved were John Allen of Bretforton,Thomas Symonds,Tom Hobbins,Giles Hunt and Thomas Palmer.Hunt was the first to be arrested after items of Mrs Palmers were found in his house. He turned Queens evidence, was pardoned and implicated the other men. They were tried at the Assizes at Worcester in March 1708,sentenced to death and hanged on the gallows there at Redhill.
The body of John Allen was taken to Bretforton and hung in chains on a gibbet near the site of Allens barn and the body of Hobbins was exhibited in the same way at Upton Snodsbury.
Parking is near the Fleece inn and church in Bretforton, walk down Bridge street over the bridge right on the road and then left on the footpath.
I`m not sure if John Allens ghost still hangs around in these parts so its up to you if you do this cache in the dark.
