Blurb from "The Street Where You Live" pp182-3)
"In 1882, John L. Merriam subdivided a 140-acre tract between the Short Line railroad and Marshall Avenue, between Dewey Street and Cleveland Avenue. He built a depot where the railroad intersected with Prior Avenue, and he built the first Longfellow School. To prevent speculation in this railroad suburb, he stipulated a house worth at least $1,500 had to be completed within a year of the lot purchase. It was a successful venture, and within two years four more additions extended the boundaries of the original community. Within the addition, Merriam included an eight-acre park named Merriam Terrace."

excerpt from "Oh Merriam" by Paul Simon
(with an intentional misspelling of "Marion")

The boy's got a heart
But it beats on the opposite side
It's a strange phenomenon
The laws of nature defied
He said "Its a chance I had to take
So I shifted my heart for its safety sake"
The boy's got a heart but it beats on
His opposite side

Oh, Merriam,
I think I'm in trouble here
I should have believed you
When I heard you saying it
The only time
That love is an easy game
Is when two other people
Are playing it
