Geocache Description:

On the waterways leat above Wessenden Lodge with good views over the reservoir.

Wessenden Lodge is in my mind where Lower Wessenden turns the corner into Upper Wessenden. If you've walked south along the leat, this cache will be where you get your first views of the upper reaches of Wessenden

On the history of Wessenden lodge, down below:
There was a farm at Wessenden (called sometimes Hay Green, not to be confused with the Hey Green west of Tunnel End). It is shown in the 1841 census but is probably much earlier. This is the ruined building to the north-west of the present Wessenden Lodge.
In the 1881 census there seems to have been a navvie’s camp at Wessenden, and this would doubtless have been the work on Wessenden Head Reservoir. The settlement included their own police officer to keep order!
In the 1891 census “Wessenden Cottage” appears alongside the farm, with a caretaker living there, and this was presumably the shooting lodge. because in 1901 the resident was called “Shooting box caretaker”. The shooting rights were let out by the Manor of Marsden, who owned the moors, to various gentlemen, and this could cause conflict with local farmers, who also had rights (called “Beast Gates” or “Sheep Gates”) to graze the moor, and who wanted to burn the heather to stimulate growth of grass for their cattle, or who found their shepherding was interrupted by shooting parties.
In the first half of the twentieth century teas were served at Wessenden Lodge and it was a popular destination for walking parties, who would sometimes continue up the track to the Isle of Skye Inn (now demolished) on the Holmfirth to Saddleworth road.

This cache is the 3rd in the Wessenden Hike Multi series (GC169PY)
