This place is of international importance. It is a huge bronze monument to the heroism of Russian sailors during a battle with the Japanese in 1904, it is not a "war" memorial, no names of the dead appear. It is the only monument to Russian heroism outside Russia On 27 January 1904 fifteen Japanese battleships surrounded the first class cruiser ‘Varyag’ and the ‘Koreyet’ gunboat at the Korean port of Chemulpo. The commander of the Japanese squadron demanded that they surrender and lower their flags. The Russian seamen rejected the ultimatum and led both ships out of the port to engage in battle. Being heavily outnumbered the ships sustained serious damage from enemy fire. When it became clear that continued resistance was impossible, the Russian seamen scuttled the ships and were taken aboard by foreign vessels stationed nearby. They were received at home in Russia as heroes. The Varyag after the Russian revolution being a symbol of the old regime was on its way to be turned into scrap on the orders of the new regime but ran aground and sank on its way to the ship breaker. The Varyag is thought of in Russia in much the same way Americans look upon the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbour and is an important part of Russian history. For first to find there are two dvd's about the Varyag and the ceremony in Scotland and an exclusive pin badge which was given to those attending the event here. Due to a winter high tide and storm the original boulder formation has been destroyed, boulders weighing tons have been tossed about and soil erroded. March 2009, the cache has been relocated to a highter position but it will be difficult to retrieve and replace if many people about. It was raining when I relocated, if it goes missing again I will find another place for the cache. There is a spoiler picture in the gallery showing the original hiding place and two spoiler pics showing the new, gpsr was accurate to seventeen feet when I took co-ords. Please do not park, cache and dash, take time to read the story on the plaque, if having difficulty English is on the other side! Enjoy the view and ponder how a nation which buried its history for a hundred years is now re-visiting its heritage.
