Chiget is a very small beach located near the North Field area of Tinian. The trail to Chiget beach is usually cleared but it may be overgrown. It is a fairly gentle trail that slopes slowly toward the beach. To get to the cache you need to head southwest from the beach. This may entail climbing over small boulders and cutting a little bit through the undergrowth with a machete.
To start this hike, you need to find the trail head first. It is about 5 miles north of the main town of San Jose on Tinian. Just follow Boardway, the main road to the airport, past the East Circle to North Field. See the Way Point for the trail head coordinates. When you park, look for a green and white metal pole about 3 to 4 feet high. This is where the trail starts.
Take the trail to Chiget beach, less than one-quarter of a mile from the parking area. Chiget is one of the most unusual beaches on Tinian. It was created because of a fault area that runs from this area on Tinian to the south end of Saipan. This is also the only place on Tinian that you can find turtle grass. If you decide to go swimming, be careful along the south wall of Chiget. There are large black sea urchins there! Chiget is an excellent place to go snorkeling and just to relax.
Once at Chiget it is time to start looking for the cache. You may need a fairly sensitive GPS because of the tree coverage. Mine had no problem getting a signal, but it is fairly new with a very sensitive chip set. If you look from the beach toward the cache direction, you will notice a large rock. Near the base of this large rock is the best way to head toward the cache. The cache is near the cliff wall.
The cache is a small plastic locktight container. It contains a yellow log book and some other small items.
Good luck in your hunt.
