History
Cancer Survivors Park is a 3.5 acre park located
on the edge of Audubon Park at Perkins and Perkins Extended
(immediately west of Theatre Memphis). The grounds were
designed for "relaxation, meditation and reflection," with
life-affirming themes from art to message-bearing plaques designed
specifically for cancer patients, cancer survivors and their
families.
The park includes a bronze sculpture by Mexican sculptor Victor
Salmones with eight human figures passing through a maze depicting
the "cancer journey." This was his last work. Park visitors are
invited to walk through the maze sculpture as part of their own
journey.
The park also includes a "positive mental attitude walk" with 14
plaques bearing inspirational thoughts for those with cancer and
suggestions for fighting cancer. Another element is a "road to
recovery" pathway, with seven plaques explaining what cancer is and
actions to take to overcome the disease. This is a project ten
years in the making and there are several others across the
country.
The Cache
You are looking for a micro. Please enjoy the sculpture nearby
and the inspirational plaques along the walk to the cache. Do keep
in mind that this place was designed to be a place of tranquility
and reflection, so please be respectful of those around you. I
intentionally made this cache rather easy so that would be the
case. Also, please note that someone has placed a small leather
pouch in within a few feet of the geocache with a stamp inside that
relates to surviving cancer. "This is not the geocache you are
looking for." If you find it first, please replace it as found and
continue your search for the cache with log.
As with most parks in Memphis it is recommended that you keep your
hunting schedule to 'sun-rise' to 'sun-set' (dawn to dusk).
Note: Thanks to Abiectio for the great picture.
