Geocache Description:

The above coordinates are of somewhere convenient and free to park, not those of the cache. The walk is on quiet village roads, and well marked, well walked footpaths. It is ideal for young kids, who get to explore an old castle. Walk is no more than 1 mile.

Old Bolingbroke is a lovely village mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It sits midway between the market towns of Spilsby and Horncastle. It is also the gateway to the Wolds. As you enter the village you will see that it is surrounded by hills on 3 sides, in a horseshoe shape. Only if you enter from the South do you avoid steep hills, as the Wolds merge with the Fens. Bolingbroke was once a wealthy town, sporting a large and powerful castle. The castle was a Royalist stronghold during the civil war, and in fact a large battle was fought with troops from the castle just up the road at Winceby. The ruins of the castle, which was devastated when Parliamentarians gained victory, still host a battle re-enactment every year. The castle was once so powerful that in fact an English King was born and lived there. Henry IV, hence the cache name. I wont bore you with all the detail, as you will read all about it in your travels. In order to complete the cache, you will need to explore the ruins of the castle, an old church, and some other local features in order to collect the required numbers.
