Not far from the path but NOT in the ruined barn. The building does not hold the cache.
There are 3 caches hidden in this valley.
Borrowdale is beautiful valley which is not often visited. There is only one property inhabited in the valley so there is practically no traffic. The path through the valley is great for cycling and walking. There is only one path in the valley bottom which means you have to cycle or walk back the same way. To make it a circular route you would could walk along the ridge taking in Whinfell Beacon and Grayrigg Pike and then return in the valley or visa versa.
Parking is available at both ends of the valley, just off the A685 and also in a lay-by on the A6. Both these areas have historical backgrounds, one much older than the other.
Near the Hucks Bridge (A6) end of the route is the place where the Leyland Motors Clock once stood. It was placed here to mark the exact spot half way between Land’s End and John O’Groats. It was sited on the A6 in 1931 and was moved, following the opening of the M6, to The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal in 1973, take a look next time you are in Kendal. It was one of seven clocks located by the Leyland Motor Company at prominent locations on major trunk roads as an advertising campaign.
Near the Low Borrow Bridge (A685) end is the site of an old Roman Fort although there is little to be seen on the ground, aerial photos (Google Earth) show a clear outline of the ground works. Finds from the fort are held at Kendal Museum.
Borrowdale was under threat of being flooded to become a reservoir in the 1960’s and again in the 1970’s. If you walk or cycle in this beautiful area I’m sure you will be glad we can still come to this wonderful valley.
The valley is approximately 5 miles long. The track follows the river crossing it twice providing a place to cool your feet on a hot day. Some of the valley is wooded, some is boggy, if you visit in the summer you will be winding your way through meadows full of wild flowers.
I hope you enjoy your visit, happy caching.
