East Green farm had stood in the Shenleys since the 16th century. Surrounded by it's own orchards it was an isolated farm in it's rural setting. I remember going to village fetes, held there. Shenley Lodge developed around it and in 1995 the farm was re-developed into the Old Beams pub. A fire gutted the place in 2005 and re-construction has taken 2 years. A major hold up was the discovery of 25 Great Crested newts in the area. It is illegal to catch, possess or handle them. The brewery had to pay £25,000 for measures to protect the newts. The pub is now open again for business.
