Many sports teams choose to recognize and commemorate their greatest stars by retiring the players' uniform numbers. Often, teams will hang replicas of uniforms in the rafters of the stadiums where fans can see them and reminisce about their favorite players.

This cache recognizes some of my favorite baseball players who have had their numbers retired by their teams.

"Steady Eddie" had his number retired by the Baltimore Orioles. He hit homeruns from both sides of the plate in the same game 11 times, sharing the all-time record, at the time, with Chili Davis until Mark Teixeira broke it on 8/2/11. Years later, the leaderboard has Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher at the top with 14 times, Carlos Beltran with 12, and then "Steady Eddie" and Chili Davis with 11.

After retiring from the Yankees, "Joltin' Joe" was married to Marilyn Monroe. Where have you gone?

This Angels pitcher currently holds the major league record for most strikeouts, most walks, and most no-hitters.

This Cincinnati Red slugger set a National League record for scoring runs in 17 consecutive games in 1955.

This screwballer from the New York Giants consecutively struck out 5 future Hall of Famers in an All-Star Game.

This Orioles infielder played in a record 2,632 consecutive ball games, a record many say will never be broken.

This future underwear model never allowed a grand slam homerun in his Orioles career and is the only pitcher to win World Series games in 3 different decades.

"Pops" brought "We Are Family" to his Pittsburgh Pirates and is currently the only player to hit two homeruns out of Dodger Stadium.

This Boston Red Sox 18-time All-Star was the last player to win baseball's triple crown until Miguel Cabrera accomplished this feat in 2012.

One of the first 5 men to be inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, this Yankee "Sultan of Swat" is often regarded as the best player of all time.
