*gln: ARCHIVING ABANDONED CACHE

Greetings,

It looks like our timing is off and It’s time to say goodbye to this cache.

Since I haven't seen any maintenance here in a while, I assume that your priorities have changed and you’ve gone in a different direction.

Archiving due to lack of maintenance is permanent.
CACHE ARCHIVAL IS PERMANENT.

Let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Thanks a MILLION for all you have done, Glenn

Geocache Description:

Get Your Kicks On Route 66.
Enjoy your drive down the Mother Road.

The intent of this series is to point out historic or unique places along old route 66 between IL and CA. It is NOT meant to be a power trail as caches may be 50 miles or more apart. Stop and enjoy these sights along the way.

********** Nov. 1, 2009 **********

On Nov. 1st, 2009, MODOT has permamently closed the old Rt 66 bridge to automobile and foot traffic, due to the condition of the bridge. Both ends are gated and chain link fence prohibits getting on the bridge to walk across.
Temporary signs are placed on I-44 indicating the exit needed to enter the park. However, entering the park from the new entrance will NOT allow access to this cache or to the visitors center/ museum.
So to access the cache and visitors center, use the "old" exit 266 on I-44 (Lewis Road-available East or West bound). Then you can travel West on I-44 and follow the signs for the exit necessary to enter the park.

This stop is at Route 66 State Park just west of St. Louis. The large building was originally Bridgehead Inn, a resturant/roadhouse built in 1935. In 1946 it burned down and was rebuilt as Steiny's Inn. Now the building is the Route 66 Park office and visitor's center, which includes a free museum and gift shop. Pictures, stories, and relics are on display in the museum. Across the bridge is Route 66 State Park, which was originally the town of Times Beach.

It became famous in the flood of 1982 when the town was flooded and became uninhabitable because the asphalt roads had been sprayed with waste oil containing dioxin. After a major cleanup and burning the soil in 1996-1997, the land was turned into a park. During the summer and fall, car shows and other events are held here.

The cache is available 24/7. However, the park is not.
