Sogndalstrand was mentioned as early as 1660 as a significant
harbor in Norway.
In 1863 Sogndalstrand had a population of 500. During the 1970
decade there were 20 stores, 4 bakeries, 2 distilleries ad 4
bars. There was a toll (customs) station, a bank, a spinnery,
sailboat dock, post office, a midwife, a sheriff, and the town even
had its own jail. The jail was mostly used as a lockup cell
for drunk people after night revelry on the townsquare.
When the industrial age got its foothold in Norway, it had
consequences also for Sogndalstrand. People moved to the bigger
cities, herring was no longer popular, which made it hard for the
fishermen. One by one, the stores were closed down, and
Sogndalstrand was little by little transformed to a ghost
town. Houses deteriorated, and the last store was closed in
1994.
Sogndalstrand, including buildings and culture landscape, is now
protected by government conservation. Thanks to
national protection and its financial initiatives, there has
been a great deal of restoration and improvement of Sogndalstrand.
This district`s administrative office has provided for an extensive
laying of calsium in the river Sokna which means the river
teems with salmon once again.
Sogndalstrand has become an oft-visited attraction, with a
peaceful and restful atmosphere without stress. In 2005 there were
no less than 35,000 visitors to Sogndalstrand. The interest is
increasing.

Allerede i 1660 årene ble Sogndalstrand
nevnt som et av de betydeligste ladestedene i landet. I
1863 bodde det over 500 innbyggere i ladestedet.
I 1870 årene var det 20 forretninger, 4 bakerier, 2
brennevinsutsalg og 4 skjenkesteder. Det var også tollstasjon,
bank, spinneri, seilskutepark, post, jordmor, lensmann, ja til og
med et eget fengsel. Dette ble helst brukt som fyllearrest, etter
lørdagens utskeielser på torget. Da industrialiseringen for alvor
slo inn i Norge fikk dette også konsekvenser for Sogndalstrand.
Folk flyttet til byene, silda forsvant og gjorde det vanskelig for
fiskerne. En etter en la butikkene ned og Sogndalstrand forvandlet
seg mer og mer til en spøkelsesby. Husene forfalt og siste butikk
la ned i 1994.
Idag bor det ca 80 innbyggere i Sogndalstrand. Endel av de gamle
husene benyttes som fritidshus.
Sogndalstrand med bebyggelse og kulturlandskap er imidlertidig
fredet av Riksantikvaren. Det finnes villsauer i landskapet på
Strannaåsen. Riksantikvaren har kalt stedet for "kystens Røros".
Det er skjedd en hel del forbedringer med restaurering av
Sjøhusrekken, med bl.a. midler fra Riksantikvaren.
Fylkesmannen i Rogaland har sørget for et om fattende
kalkningsprosjekt i elva Sokna som igjen gjør at laksen spretter i
elva som aldri før.
Sogndalstrand er en svært godt besøkt attraksjon med et rolig og
avslappende miljø uten stress. Det var i 2005, 35 000 besøkende i
Sogndalstrand. Interessen er økende.
