Cuckoo Pen Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Phillimore Clan: Well this cache has been muggled again and as we don't have any great attachment to this location and it's not the easiest for us to maintain these days we've decided to call it a day and archive it.
Thanks to the 400+ who found this cache and all your logs which we have enjoyed reading. This lovely spot is now free for anyone who might like to place a new cache here.

Geocache Description:

A reasonably short walk from the car park involving a climb up the
hill to the ancient beech woodland on the top.

The cache is placed on the top of Round Hill, one of three making up the Sinodun Hills. The two larger hills (Castle & Round) are useually known as the Wittenham Clumps although they have been known in the past as the Berkshire Bubs and Mother Dunch's Buttocks. This clump of trees are sometimes called the Cuckoo Pen, the locals believed that if you could trap a cuckoo within its branches, summer would never end. This was to be the location of out first Geocache but unfortunately at that time these woods were not open to the public so the cache was placed on the nearby Castle Hill. Whilst revisiting the area on a maintance visit we found that these woods have now been opened so took the oportunity to place a small cache we happened to have on us.
