Geocache Description:

A three mile (one-way) hike, mostly on two-track, through an aspen and conifer forest. Starts at 9000' and gains about 600'.

Mrs PP and I had a wonderful hike through the brilliant autumn colors with our Red Heeler Chelly. We had hoped to take a more remote trail, but hunting season was in full force and we decided to stay on the main drag. I got a picture of Chelly posing on a mound of igneous rock in front of a distant peak, and decided to place a cache there. I'm not real big on micros, but I happened to have one in my pack, so that's what we left. Make sure you bring a writing implement!

There is a little scambling required during the first portion of this hike, but it's not very scary. Eventually, you'll need to hop over one cattle gate. Do wear something bright if it's hunting season. Be alert for cattle as well...Chelly had a great time herding the ones that joined us briefly in our walk.

Here's one way to get to the trailhead. I don't know if the two-track is accessible at the other end...it doesn't appear to be on the map. From highway 17, turn northwest onto FR 121 (Google Earth calls it CO Road 445, Yahoo Maps calls it CO 50.00) approximately 5 miles north of Chama, NM, and proceed to WP PARK to reach the trailhead. A high clearance vehicle is recommended. Just follow the well worn trail and two-track as it loops back within 0.5 miles of itself. You'll pass "The End of the Road" (GCWH04) on your way. It may be possible to shorten your hike considerably by bushwacking, but why not take a leisurely stroll instead?

Note: The turnoff from Hwy 17 is at a great place to grab a picture of the Chama train if you're there just after 10:00.
