Before the flat-Earth theory gained popularity, a chief librarian named Eratosthenes living in Alexandria,
Egypt knew not only that the Earth was round, he also came up with a method to determine it's size. Not bad for a guy living over 2,200 years ago! Understanding his technique will help you discover the true latitude of this cache. The above coordinates are not entirely for the cache.
At high noon on June 21st of this year, I set a rod onto the ground where I wanted to place a cache. The rod was 1 metre in length and placed perpendicular to the ground (hint: on a radial axis with the Earth). The length of the shadow cast by the rod at the cache site was 40.38095 cm. Curiously, when I had placed the same rod in the same position back on March 21st, it's shadow was 0.61127042m longer (don't ask me how I measured that
).
Determine the latitude of the cache then go find it.
