Geocache Description:

Cammo'd decon hanging in a Cook Pine, about .25 mi from the parking area. BRING A PENCIL. GPS RECEPTION IS VERY DIFFICULT IN THE GROVE, ESPECIALLY DURING CLOUDY WEATHER. BE SURE TO HAVE THIS DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND SPOILER PHOTOS WITH YOU! A????

Kahili Mountain Park hosts a school and rustic cabins, all with a glorious setting, including two wonderful hiking trails open to the public. You'll feel like you are in a forest cathedral as you enjoy the beauty and solitude - very few know about this lovely spot!

The cache is located in the large Cook Pine grove (they're not true pines but are majestic) that you can see from Highway 50. Spend some time exploring the grove area and enjoying these incredible views.

.

About a quarter mile west of the road to Koloa on Highway 50, turn north onto a cane road - and follow signs about 2 miles to Kahili School and Park. You may drive past the "No Trespassing" signs, as the hiking trails are open to everyone. As you enter the park area, check in at the office and sign in on the hikers book outside the office door. The park is open to the public. Be aware of school traffic, and note that as an Adventist facility, offices are closed Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday (but the park is open).

Follow your GPS up the road between the school and the meadow and cabins and park at 21 57.670, 159 28.989. Do NOT take the Ridge Trail which ascends steeply to the top of Mt Kahili. Pick up the trail (photo) on the other side of the road from the small parking area (and sign pointing to other cabins ahead). The trail is overgrown to start, but gets clearer as you approach the grove. You'll walk through a guava forest and see the damage wild boars do to the environment (don't worry - they're only out at night and are wary of people anyway).

About .25 mi from parking, you'll enter the main grove, and see a large rock and a dead leaning snag on your right (photo). From this point, look for a gap in the trees on the S/W edge of the grove, just beyond a group of 6 boulders (photo).

Walk to the gap; you'll have a wonderful view of forests and the tree tunnel road to Koloa. Look for a small path leading S/E; about 20' down this path is a flattish 4'X4' volcanic boulder in the path (photo). Stand on this boulder and reach into a multi-trunk 20' Cook Pine, 4' from the trail, about 4' high.

Thanks! REHIDE WELL. IT SHOULD NOT BE VISIBLE FROM THE TRAIL.

I cleaned out and restocked cache 9/13/10
