A 5mi. drive out of Battlement Mesa up C.R.302 gets you to the cache site. The cache is hidden where the road and the creek meet - close to the test site. The road is usually in good condition but the site is at an altitude of 8,150ft, snow could be a problem.
Project Rulison was part of Operation Plowshare which investigated peaceful uses of nuclear explosions. On Sept. 10, 1969 an underground detonation took place at this site; a 43-kiloton bomb was placed at the bottom of an 8,426ft well and exploded. The purpose of the project was to determine if natural gas could be freed from the low grade deposits deep below the surface, the gas that they produced was determined to be "too radioactive" to be sold commercially.
The site was sealed and cleaned up in the 70's but the controversy over natural gas drilling in the area continues.
The test site is now located on private property, but close to the road, and pictures can be taken.
Much information on this subject is available on the web.
