Geocache Description:

Honoring the memories of the Native peoples that once called this area home.

The Kalapuya Indians were a small semi-nomadic tribe who migrated throughout the Willamette Valley during the warmer months of the year. These peoples were the earliest inhabitants of Salem - living a peaceful hunting and gathering lifestyle. They thrived on the abundant wildlife and foods that the area offered, before being decimated by the illnesses brought by first Jason Lee's missionaries and then the Roman Catholic missionaries who followed soon afterwards.

There is evidence to support that this area of South Salem once was home to a number of sweat lodges and pools used in the healing and purification ceremonies of the Kalapuyas.

Attached is a map reproduced from a narrative by Lewis H. Judson in the early 1960's talking of his childhood in Salem playing amongst the remains of these lodges.
(Marion County Historical Society Vol 8 1962-1964)

The cache is on a small swatch of City of Salem property in a residential area. Cache responsibly with respect for the neighbors.
