North Van Public Art #6 - Victoria Park Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Public Art: And then there were two...

Sad day, archiving one of the few remaining original caches in this series, but the growing need for repeated maintenance visits was just too exhausting. Thanks to all who took the time to search for this cache, kudos to the finders, apologies to the DNFers.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the North Vancouver Public Art Geocache experience! The Arts Office is dedicated to preserving and expanding the celebrated public art collections of both the City and the District of North Vancouver, and through this series of caches we are pleased to be able to showcase some wonderful examples of public art that can be found across the North Shore.

Near these coordinates you can find the following art pieces:

Trees, Ships and Water: Atkinson Iconography Studio 2006
A colonnade of illuminated masts-like structures which will support clematis vines, provide stories of the past and future on the bases and relevant talismans on the crowns. This piece extends across Lonsdale so please be careful crossing the road if you wish to see the whole exhibit.

The Long Ascent: Veronica & Edwin Dam de Nogales 2007
This equestrian sculpture with the historic water trough pays homage to those who trod before us. Horses, ascending from the waterfront on the left side, hauled supplies up the steep incline to developing commercial and residential sites. The path formed by stainless steel hoof prints leads to where horses paused for a well-needed rest.

Enduring Love: Daniel J. Cline 2010
Located just 60 metres northwest of the cache in Victoria Park West, this sculpture and its surrounding path represents the creative outcome of a collaborative community art process inviting bereaved parents to express the love felt for children lost from our sight but not from our hearts. The white marble sculpture is surrounded by 57 flagstones each inscribed with words or an image contributed by a project participant. The sculpture’s striking white marble, which was quarried from the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, has been finely polished to invite touch and create a glow in the sunlight that it is almost translucent. (EDIT June 30/11 - there are now 63 flagstones)

Please take the time to enjoy the art and comment of your favourite piece. This cache is placed near one the featured public art pieces so you will have to hunt around to find all the art. Consider this art-treasure-hunt as a bonus cache destination. Take some photos, post your comments and don't forget to tell me what you think is your favourite piece in this geocache location.

A lot of muggles are lurking close by so don't go for the cache if the place is too busy. You can always have a quick look at the art while you are waiting for the place to cool down. The container is a small camo-ed L&L hidden under a rock.

As always have a great Geocache time and I hope you have a chance to visit more public art locations around the North Shore.
