SkyHigh#5 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wizard of Ooze: As the cache owner has not indicated that they have visited the cache location to replace it if missing, perform needed maintenance, or verify that it is still there within the requested time period, I am regretfully archiving the cache to clear it from the active cache database and open the area to new caching opportunities.

If the cache owner would like to replace a cache at this location, please submit a new geocache listing and it will be reviewed under the current geocaching.com guidelines. Please don’t post a note on your archived listing as it won’t be forwarded to me and I won’t see it. If you need to contact me, please do so by emailing me through the contact link on my geocaching.com profile page or through my website www.wizardofooze.com

Thank you for your contributions to geocaching, and we hope to see you actively geocaching once again in the near future.

Geocache Description:

As of July 31 2013, that cache has been disabled. The container had been smashed and moved to the beginning of the trail where it was in a plastic bag hanging from a tree branch. It contained a message shown in the following picture. I am very sorry it came to that after so many visits, and so many people happy with the experience!

Warning: you have to be in good shape for this one! Wear good solid footwear (or you will be sorry!), and be careful. Attempt only in good weather conditions. Horizontal distance at least 3000 feet, vertical climb 1250'.

Starting on a good paved secondary road, you turn off at N50°40.779',-W120°46.199' at an altitude of 2720 feet, and drive west for a bit more than .3 mile on an active logging road until you get to a very old road on your right. You might have to leave your vehicle there, but a good 4-wheel drive will allow you to get to the end of that road. That's where the beginning of the trail is, easy to see on the left side with marking tape. I found that it had been well traveled lately, so it should be easy to follow.. The cache is one thousand feet higher.

But if you need another hint: there are three ridges you could hike on to get to the cliffs, but only the center one will take you to the right spot. To start on it, get to N50°41.077’,-W120°47.205 otherwise you will have to backtrack through some very deep and steep ravines, which I would not recommend (having done it myself!) You will come across some very interesting rocks on the way up, maybe even the famous Savona Mountain Opal....

N50°41.181’, W120°47.536’ will see you at the 4000-foot level, in front of the main caves. A good place to stop for lunch and a deserved break. Bring your camera to record the petroglyphs. The brown stuff covering the floor of the main cave is quite smelly, and you will notice the huge packrat nest by the south end.

The cache now located at N50°41.183' W120°47.518' right in front of the main cave. My new Garmin GPSmap 60Cx had no problem finding the satellite signals.

Enjoy the trip, enjoy the view; and be very careful. And bring pleaty of water, there is none up there!
