Geocache Description:

Nice and easy stroll. Cachers are asked to park in the hotel conference centre car park, then it's a stroll on a path.

Norton Estate (No.2 of Norton Cache circuit)

The cache is placed on private land. The owners are happy for people to walk their dogs or walk around but please stick to the paths. There are often cattle kept in the fields. The road can be busy as well.

There has long been a settlement at Norton or "North Toun" as it was originally known. An early mention of the area was in a charter dated 30th October 1444, to the Chaplains of Nortoun and Ratho Byres. "The teinds of Nortoun and Byres, with ten merks Scots, half yearly, out of the common purse"

In 1835 before the house that stands now, there was a different dwelling and the Reid family were recorded as being in residence.

The big road that you see from here was not built at that time and it was straight over the fields to Ratho Byres.

Please note on 14 September 2018 I changed the position of this cache very slightly.
