Near the ruins of an 11th Century castle, and the site of a crashed WWII bomber - terrain is very easy with a few stiles.
The cache site is full of interest and history, as well as being a great viewing point over this area of Shropshire.
Originally one of a pair of Norman-style motte and bailey castles (essentially a large mound with a keep on top) that were on either side of the River Severn and guarding a crossing point.
In the 12th Century one was abandoned, and this castle rebuilt in timber and stone…until 1215 when it was destroyed by the Welsh in an attack on Shrewsbury.
Henry III ordered it to be rebuilt in 1220, where it survived until the Civil War – there was a (successful) siege by Cromwell’s men who set fire to it and carted much of the stone off to repair the walls of Shrewsbury Castle!
The mound and part of the old moat are still there, as well as parts of the walls, and there’s a public footpath to the top of the mound and some brilliant views over Shropshire.
Very close by is a beautiful area with seats, a large natural pond, and a memorial to the crew of an American B24 Liberator bomber that crashed nearby in September 1944 after a failed landing attempt at Montford Bridge.
There’s a pull in near to the site, where it’s possible to park close to the obvious entrance to the field should you wish to, or public footpaths will take you to the site.
Cache is a good sized container, wrapped in a dark bio-degradable bag – after a few comments of the cache being easily visible in winter, we've now hidden the cache under two flat stones and leaves....will still be an easy find though.
Initial contents include a number of new CDs (please take only one at a time), Mouse Trap! TB, books and assorted goodies for children
